Sheep in the Moonlight

by Jennifer Floyd

Silver moonlight streaming
over oaken shelter
throws crisp shadows
across ewes’ fleecy backs
shifting silver-grey
and ebony, dappled-dark.

The liquid light
flows along the arcing curve
of the rams horns
sparkles through his raven mane
and trails off in the shifting shadows
of his flanks.

Stars spark like fireflies
in the branches of the oak tree
peeping through still leaves
above drifting, four-legged storm clouds
where moonlight flickers
twinned stars
from the mysterious eyes of the sheep.

Breath’s fog lifting through the lambent night
the flock swirls slowly
a pearly wave surging
deeper under the drooping boughs
resisting the pull of the moon.
